Quality Control of Olives by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and AssureID Software

19 Oct 2015

Olive oil is an increasingly popular food product worldwide, with global production exceeding 3.0 million tons in 2011 and showing steady annual growth. Despite these huge volumes, however, margins are relatively small in olive oil production so quick and easy analysis of oil quality is vital to maintain process efficiency. Rapid, reliable analysis can contribute to process and quality improvements in numerous ways. This note describes how a PerkinElmer Frontier™ FT-NIR spectrometer and AssureID software have been used by an olive oil producer in Spain to improve productivity by implementing the above analyses within their routine production.

Infrared / IR SpectroscopyInfrared (IR) spectroscopy measures the interaction of infrared light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance & absorbance, facilitating the identification of analytes. Equipment used for quantitative analysis includes Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, infrared cameras, FTIR gas analyzers, as well as attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessories and pellet or film presses.
