Nitrosamine analysis from aqueous solutions using headspace-SIFT-MS
31 Jul 2024Nitrosamines have been classified as belonging to the Cohort of Concern (CoC) in the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) M7 with stringent AI limits, and drug manufacturers frequently perform impurity testing to meet such regulatory guidelines. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) provides rapid, sensitive, and selective quantitation of nitrosamines in pharmaceutical drug products. This application note describes an alternative approach to quantifying nitrosamines using SIFT-MS: static headspace analysis (SHA) of dissolved drug products. See how headspace-SIFT-MS analysis achieves excellent linearity and limits of detection (<10% of the acceptable daily intake (AI) limits) for six nitrosamines.

Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place.
