Measuring Small Quantities of Dry Powder Using the Aero S and Mastersizer 3000
5 Apr 2015The routine measurement of particle size plays an important role in pharmaceutical and other industries, where it is often a critical-to-quality attribute for the product. In this application note, aliquots as small as 5mg of fine grade, pharmaceutical lactose were measured to show that the measurement reproducibility is well within the ISO laser diffraction standard guidelines on repeatability. This fine grade of lactose is an established model material for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Sample PreparationSample preparation can improve the quality and speed of separation techniques. Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.Particle CharacterizationParticle characterization instruments are used to determine particle size distribution, shape, surface area, zeta potential, density and porosity of particles and materials. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters.
