Easier Sensor Sterility and Fewer Batch Losses
24 Sept 2017Most fermentation processes require strict sterility; therefore, in-line analytical sensors must be sterilized prior to inoculation. This is especially true when referring to fermentation conducted in benchtop bioreactors, usually autoclaved to obtain sterility prior to starting a batch. This application note describes the latest developments in analytical sensors that have made this procedure significantly easier, and greatly improved process safety.

MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Typical instrumentation includes blanchers, color sorters, cookers, grinders, and refrigeration. These are used to replicate the processes commonly used in the commercial preparation of food and beverages.Bioprocessing / FermentationBioprocessing is the use of biological materials to perform commercial, scientific or medical research processes. Biological materials used include cells, enzymes and organisms. Usually bioprocessing requires a batch or continuous bioreactor such as a fermentor or cell culture system. The advantages of using a reactor include high productivity, easy configuration, adjustable values and automation.Process DevelopmentProcess development aims to optimize the performance of manufacturing systems. This involves the assessment of quality and efficiency of both processes and products. This is particularly important in the scale-up of chemical processes.Food SafetyFood safety describes the prevention of food-borne illnesses. Contamination with a variety of pathogens can be prevented with adequate temperature control, hygiene and labeling. Food samples can be tested using GC/MS, HPLC, SPE, and qPCR to ensure their adherence to regulations.Process OptimizationProcess optimization involves improving the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality of processes in various industries, including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.
