Agriculture
The Thermo Antaris II FT-NIR analyzer is a robust system designed for multiple types of samples ranging from liquid to powders and solids. A handheld probe allows for analyses of grain samples within storage bags and containers. Spectral collection is relatively straightforward and data analysis can be achieved using the TQAnalyst software or exported to various softwares for analysis. Overall, I recommend this system as an entry-level system for NIR analyses.

The Thermo Scientific Antaris™ II FT-NIR analyzer solves industrial quality problems by providing timely measurements in the lab, at production point-of-use, or in real-time processes on a common near-infrared platform. The Antaris provides method, procedure, and platform transferability of analytical quality control along the product development and scale-up process.
The Antaris™ II system is the next evolution of the first, dedicated FT-NIR analyzer designed specifically for use in the industrial environments of the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, chemical and polymer industries.
The Standard for NIR Analyzer Design
The Antaris FT-NIR analyzer continues to set the standard for the design and manufacture of full-range, near infrared analyzers. Antaris sets the standard by including:
• High performance combined with rugged design
• Reproducibility regardless of configuration, user, or environment
• Regulatory traceability incorporated into every element of design
• Suitable platform for every point in the NIR lifecycle (e.g. facilitating method development, deployment, transfer, and routine operation)
Quantification of vitamin C using FT-NIR spectroscopy
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific discusses the analysis of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), a popular dietary supplement and antioxidant, using Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy. Ascorbic acid is commonly mixed with excipients like starch in various applications, making traditional analysis methods complex and time-consuming. FT-NIR spectroscopy offers a simpler and more rapid alternative, utilizing the electromagnetic spectrum to interact with the sample's characteristic molecular vibrations. The Thermo Scientific™ Antaris™ II Method Development Sampling (MDS) FT-NIR Analyzer was employed to analyze different mixtures of ascorbic acid in starch, providing accurate and reliable data without the need for complicated equipment or highly trained analysts.
Trace contaminant analysis in biodiesel with an Antaris II FT-NIR Analyzer
In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates that the Thermo Scientific™ Antaris™ II FT-NIR Analyzer is capable of rapidly and precisely quantifying contaminant concentrations in biodiesel. Accurate quantification of trace contaminants is crucial for optimizing the biodiesel production process and ensuring the quality of the final product. The note emphasizes the significance of identifying contaminants such as glycerol, glycerides, water, methanol, or free fatty acids, as their presence indicates suboptimal steps in the biodiesel production process. Of particular importance for biodiesel quality are free and total glycerol, water, and methanol, which must adhere to ASTM D6751-07 specifications.
FT-NIR analysis of wine
Although the art of winemaking has been practised for centuries, the science of wine manufacture is relatively new. The use of chemical methods in wine analysis allows for the monitoring of such critical parameters as degrees Brix (°B), the total amount of sugar in unfermented juice, ethanol (a parameter that not only influences aroma and taste but also the rate of taxation), total and volatile acids, and pH. In this application note, Thermo Fisher Scientific demonstrates that the Antaris™ II FT-NIR Analyzer can be used successfully for the simultaneous quantitative analysis of multiple components of wine.
