Bioo Scientific, a leading supplier of food testing kits, today announced the development of a rapid strip test for the detection of a broad range of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in milk and meat samples. The AuroFlow™ Fluoroquinolone Strip Test Kit is designed as a rapid screening tool for the meat and dairy industries, detecting 8 of the major fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, below the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) set by the European Union.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, commonly used to treat veterinary infections by E. coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, and Haemophilus, are banned by the FDA for use in food-producing animals including dairy cattle and poultry. However, extra-label use and unintended contamination of poultry feed continue to be a persistent problem.

Dr. Joe Krebs, Director of Protein Chemistry and Engineering at Bioo Scientific, said, “The new AuroFlow™ Fluoroquinolone Strip Test Kit is a much easier, rapid, and cost-effective screening solution for fluoroquinolones. The new method saves food producers and regulatory agencies hours of sample preparation compared to LC/MS/MS.” The novel kit, which uses a quick dipstick format, can detect fluoroquinolone contamination in raw milk in 7 minutes and meat in less than 20 minutes. Continuing, Dr. Krebs said, “Our new fluoroquinolone assay allows dairies and meat producers to easily screen for these powerful antibiotics at their facilities, so as to assure that the milk or meat they provide consumers is truly antibiotic-free.”

The AuroFlow™ Fluoroquinolone Strip Test Kit is available in 96-test or 192-test formats for either raw milk or meat samples. It is Bioo Scientific’s latest addition to the line of kits for the detection of antibiotic residues in food. These kits are all manufactured to the international quality standard ISO 9001:2008.
