The AOAC Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in Dallas, Texas, in 2016, aims to educate and facilitate the collaboration of scientists from around the world, through scientific sessions, roundtables, workshops, and poster presentations to meet a variety of analytical needs.

Food and beverages contain a wide assortment of sugars. These range from simple sugars, such as glucose and fructose, to highly complex oligosaccharides many of which need to be identified on product labels. With strict labelling requirements for food and drink products across the globe, sugar analysis needs to be as routine as possible.

In an interview filmed at AOAC 2016, Dr Khalil Divan, PhD, Senior Director Global Marketing: Food and Beverage, Thermo Fisher Scientific, discussed the use of the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ Integrion™ HPIC™ System in sugar analysis.

The introduction of the Dionex Integrion HPIC System has revolutionized sugar analysis, enabling straightforward separation, at a very high resolution. In his discussion with SelectScience® Dr Divan highlighted the key benefits of the system, from simple sample preparation to fast analysis of a wide variety of food and beverages.

He described how high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAE-PAD) enabled derivatization free analysis of sugars, diminishing one of the key challenges in traditional sugar analysis and removing the need for complex sample preparation.

Dr Divan concluded that the introduction of the Dionex Integrion HPIC System had brought routine sugar analysis to the lab, enabling improved quality control of the product with high precision, ease of use and reliability, helping to meet the demands for product labelling.
