Deciphering the complexities in the tumour microenvironment, one cell at a time
8 May 2025
Dr. Arutha Kulasinghe (University of Queensland, Fraser Institute, Queensland Spatial Biology Centre) presented his lab's latest research focused on spatial biology and immunotherapy at the SelectScience Cancer Research Summit 2025. His team collaborates globally to develop spatially resolved predictive biomarkers for immunotherapy response and resistance across cancers such as lung, head and neck, breast, ovarian, and colorectal. The approach integrates high-throughput multiplexed imaging, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and AI-driven analysis to assess the tumour microenvironment at single-cell resolution.

BiomarkersBiomarkers are biological markers which can be measured and evaluated to indicate a biological state. The use of biomarkers in research and diagnosis can indicate a normal or disease state or drug response of cells / tissues. Biomarkers include genetic markers, cell surface markers such as antigens, antibodies or receptors and secreted molecules such as cytokines. An assay system is required for identification of biomarkers. :Spatial BiologyCancer ResearchCancer research aims to understand the mechanisms of cancer development and progression to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
