Sensitive and Repeatable Analysis of Pesticides in QuEChERS Extracts with APGC-MS/MS

21 Apr 2014

Multi-residue pesticide analysis is challenging due to the low limits of detection required in a diverse range of food commodities. As there are currently in excess of 1000 pesticides in use, laboratories are under increasing pressure to broaden the range of pesticides determined in ever shorter turnaround times. Therefore, the analytical methods they employ need to be sensitive and robust in a wide variety of sample matrices. This application note demonstrates that the Waters Xevo TQ-S equipped with an APGC source provides a sensitive and repeatable solution for the analysis of pesticides in QuEChERS extracts of strawberry, pear, and spinach.

TargetLynx

The TargetLynx™ Application Manager automates sample data acquisition, processing and reporting for quantitative results. It incorporates a range of confirmatory checks that identify samples that fall outside user-specified or regulatory thresholds. Identify Non-compliant Samples TargetLynx rapidly identifies and flags samples where: Analytes are above a specified maximum reporting level (MRL) Analyte confirmatory ion ratios are outside specified limits One or more analyte signal-to-noise ratios are below a defined value An analyte retention time or relative retention time is outside limits An analyte concentration is below set LOD and LOQ thresholds The standard deviation of response for QC standards exceeds a defined value The blank response is too high The coefficient of determination (r2) of the calibration curve exceeds a defined value LC/MS & LC/MS/MS and GC/MS & GC/MS/MS Use TargetLynx to quantify and confirm both LC/MS & LC/MS/MS and GC/MS & GC/MS/MS data. This data may be selected ion monitoring (SIM), multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), or full scan/full spectrum. In the case of full scan/spectrum data, extracted ion chromatograms are used for quantification. Ensure Regulatory Compliance The demand by regulatory authorities for assurance of confirmation in quantitative analysis continues to increase. To ensure cost-effective compliance, TargetLynx offers software that gives you confidence in your results and eliminates time-consuming, costly manual checks.

Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Visit our product directory to receive quotes direct from the manufacturer. GC-MS GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) instruments and equipment are used to separate, quantify and identify mixtures of small and volatile compounds, such as polycyclic aromatics, fatty acids and alcohols. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis. Find the best GC-MS instruments and equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.QuEChERSThe QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method is a streamlined approach that is used to extract multi-residue target compounds from food samples. It is most commonly used by analytical chemists studying pesticide residues in food.PesticidesPesticides are used to protect crops from diseases, pests and unwanted plants. They are classed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and can be harmful to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently regulates the use of pesticides in the USA. Food FraudFood adulteration refers to food when it has been has been altered unlawfully with the addition of another lower commodity food product to increase quantity. The 2013 European horsemeat scandal saw the adulteration of beef products with the addition of horse meat.
