Scale Up of Heterogeneous Reactions in Continuous Flow Systems

29 Apr 2013

Many flow techniques are well suited to production at scale and these have been used in the chemical industry for many decades. This application note demonstrates the capabilities of the FlowCAT platform, which was developed on the concept of a bench scale version of an industrial fixed bed reactor, for doing three-phase reactions on the g-kg/day scale in a manner that would be scalable to plant.

FlowCAT

The FlowCAT delivers high pressure flow chemistry in a compact, bench top unit. The flexible design allows screening, optimization and scale-up of both homogenous and heterogeneous chemistry in the same unit, and can incorporate a combination of gas and liquid feeds. Applications include hydrogenation, carbonylation or other high-pressure chemistry. Ability to switch in between applications easily, such as polymerisation, oxidation, carbonylation. Run under fixed-bed, trickle flow conditions, as well as all liquid feeds and homogeneous catalysis. It is also simple to use it in "bubble flow" mode, where the reagents are fed at the bottom of the reactor.

Combinatorial ChemistryCombinatorial chemistry, also known as combichem, is a technique used in drug discovery to create libraries of structurally related compounds. A library is generated by synthesis with a chemical reactor system or by computer-based modeling of compound combinations. When undertaking combinatorial chemistry consider reagents, buffers, resins and standards.Process ChemistryProcess chemistry is an important stage of drug development for scaling-up drug production or chemical synthesis reactions. It is useful for optimizing economical and efficient drug production. Process chemistry uses reactors and pump systems as well as reagents, standards and buffers.Flow ChemistryFlow chemistry describes a chemical reaction being carried out continuously rather than in a batch process. The reagents are pumped through a pipe and forced together at a mixing junction, where they are allowed to combine until the reaction is stopped.Chemical Process AnalysisProcess DevelopmentProcess development aims to optimize the performance of manufacturing systems. This involves the assessment of quality and efficiency of both processes and products. This is particularly important in the scale-up of chemical processes.
