Novel interference removal opportunities with the NexION 5000 ICP-MS

17 Mar 2023

In this application note, PerkinElmer provides experimental data on novel interference removal opportunities using the NexION 5000® ICP-MS. Multi-quadrupole technology, in combination with controlled reactions in the Universal Cell (UCT) of the NexION 5000 ICP-MS, has opened new possibilities for spectral interference removal. As was described in the technical note “Interferences in ICP-MS: Do we still have to worry about them?”, the MS/MS and mass shift modes, in conjunction with three cell analytical modes (Std, KED and DRC), can solve many challenging problems, not previously possible using a single quadrupole system. This work is a continuation of a discussion on spectral interference removal and presents dynamic reactions with three gases (O2, NH3 and CH4) that, in tandem with multi-quadrupole technology, are a powerful tool in interference management on the NexION 5000 ICP-MS.

Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Drug TestingIt is essential to test the efficacy and toxicity of drugs at every stage of their development to ensure that a pharmaceutical product is fit for purpose and safe for use before reaching the stage of mass production and distribution.Food TestingFood testing refers to a variety experiments including PCR, mass spectrometry, processing, QuEChERS, analyzing and Kjeldahl.ICP-MSInductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to determine the concentrations of elements and their isotopes in a variety of samples, including water, soil, and biological tissues. It involves ionizing elements in the samples with extremely high-temperature Argon (Ar) plasma and then using a mass spectrometer to measure the number of ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z).
