Neurology 4-Plex A - A Multiple Sclerosis Study
14 Dec 2018The Quanterix Simoa HD-1 Analyzer uses digital ELISA to achieve unprecedented sensitivity when measuring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood biomarkers associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system that eventually results in permanent disability. This study explored the correlation of disease severity in patients with RRMS, which accounts for more than 85% of the types of MS, with ultrasensitive measurements of human Tau protein, neurofilament light protein (NFLight), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and ubiquitin carboxyl terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1).

ELISAEnzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), also known as enzyme immunoassays (EIA), are used for the detection and quantification of proteins, peptides and antibodies in a sample. ELISA often comes in kit format, with pre-selected antibody pairs to detect specific proteins or biomarkers of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Detection is made possible with chemiluminescent, fluorescent or colorimetric substrates and detection instruments such as microplate / ELISA readers. Other kits available include: Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays for the quantification of protein-producing cells and chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) kits. Immunology kits and analysis systems often use techniques such as ELISA, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunodiffusion assays, Immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Immunologists use equipment such as flow Cytometers, plate readers, plate washers and fluorescent microscopes.Multiple SclerosisNeurodegenerationNeurodegeneration refers to the progressive deterioration of the structure and function of the nervous system, often seen in diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
