Increased Removal of Fat and Pigment from Avocado Extracts Prior to GC-MS Analysis of Pesticide and Metabolite Residues

11 Sept 2014

This work compares the effectiveness of two sorbents, Z-Sep+ and a PSA/C18 blend, in the QuEChERS cleanup of avocado extracts prior to pesticide residue analysis by GC-MS.

Supel™ QuE Z-Sep QuEChERS Tubes

Sigma-Aldrich Supelco

Supel QuE Z-Sep sorbents enhance sample cleanup for complex matrices by effectively removing more fat and color from sample extracts than traditional phases for QuEChERS. By eliminating problematic matrix interferences, Z-Sep products provide more robust LC-MS and GC-MS methods. This proprietary technology can replace C18 and PSA phases in your current methods without additional method development.Supel QuE Z-Sep/C18, a combination of Discovery® DSC-18 and Z-Sep particles, is recommended for samples containing <15% fat. Supel QuE Z-Sep+, C18 and Z-Sep dual bonded to silica, is recommended for cleanup of samples containing >15% fat. Supel QuE Z-Sep is recommended for the anlysis of hydrophobic analytes in fatty matrices.Features & Benefits: Useful for pesticide residue analysis Proprietary technology, significantly diminishes interference from fatty matrices and pigments Employs “Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged Safe” QuEChERS methodology

GC-MS GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) instruments and equipment are used to separate, quantify and identify mixtures of small and volatile compounds, such as polycyclic aromatics, fatty acids and alcohols. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis. It is most commonly used by analytical chemists studying pesticide residues in food.PesticidesPesticides are used to protect crops from diseases, pests and unwanted plants. They are classed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and can be harmful to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently regulates the use of pesticides in the USA. Food SafetyFood safety describes the prevention of food-borne illnesses. Contamination with a variety of pathogens can be prevented with adequate temperature control, hygiene and labeling. Food samples can be tested using GC/MS, HPLC, SPE, and qPCR to ensure their adherence to regulations.Food TestingFood testing refers to a variety experiments including PCR, mass spectrometry, processing, QuEChERS, analyzing and Kjeldahl.Food ContaminationFood contamination refers to the presence of harmful substances or pathogens in food, posing risks to human health. Contaminants can be biological, chemical, or physical, and their detection is crucial for ensuring food safety. Advanced testing methods like PCR, chromatography, and spectroscopy are used to identify contaminants in food products.
