How to maintain the integrity of the blood cold chain during the COVID-19 outbreak
14 Apr 2020With COVID-19 sweeping the globe, the need for a strong blood cold chain has intensified. On top of concerns regarding adequate blood supply, the world is looking at a rapid increase in serum-based antibody testing and use/research around convalescent plasma. While serological testing, also known as immunity tests, could help understand the extent of the pandemic, convalescent plasma and hyper immune globulin could help treat patients affected by SARS-CoV-2. This paper looks into the blood cold chain, sharing guidelines on the collection, storage and transport of the blood components involved in the fight against COVID-19.

Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems. Accessories in sample management include barcode scanners, heat sealers and tubes.ImmunologyImmunological techniques measure and characterize immune responses. Immunology kits and analysis systems often use techniques such as ELISA, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunodiffusion assays, Immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Immunologists use equipment such as flow Cytometers, plate readers, plate washers and fluorescent microscopes.AntibodiesAntibodies are used in techniques such as confocal and fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT, immunohistochemistry, western blotting and immunopreciptation. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.Blood CollectionPlasmaBlood AnalysisThe analysis of blood is vital for many areas of life sciences and forensic investigations. Blood samples can be tested for a number of different reasons such as diagnosis, glucose levels, cholesterol and drug testing.CoronavirusCoronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases like COVID-19.
