Development of an SPME-GC-MS Procedure for the Determination of Phthalate Esters in Ramen Noodle Flavor Packets

11 Sept 2014

In this article, solid phase microextraction (SPME) is evaluated for suitability to perform the extraction of phthalate esters from the fatty matrix of oil-based flavor packets in ramen noodle kits, eliminating the need for GPC cleanup prior to GC-MS analysis.

SLB-5ms Capillary GC Column

Sigma-Aldrich Supelco

SLB-5ms Capillary GC Column Application: The 5% phenyl equivalent phase provides a boiling point elution order with a slight increase in selectivity, especially for aromatic compounds. The low bleed characteristics, inertness, and durable nature make it the column of choice for environmental analytes (such as semivolatiles, pesticides, PCBs, and herbicides) or anywhere a low bleed non-polar column is required. USP Code: This column meets USP G27 and G36 requirements. Phase: Bonded and highly crosslinked; silphenylene polymer virtually equivalent in polarity to poly(5% diphenyl/95% dimethyl siloxane) Temp. Limits: ≤0.32 mm I.D.: -60 °C to 340 °C (isothermal) or 360 °C (programmed) Temp. Limits: ≥0.53 mm I.D.: -60 °C to 330 °C (isothermal) or 340 °C (programmed)

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- non-polar SPME Fibers.Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) is an innovative, solvent-free sample prep technology that is fast, economical, and versatile. SPME uses a fiber coated with a liquid (polymer), a solid (sorbent), or a combination of both. The fiber coating removes the compounds from your sample by absorption in the case of liquid coatings or adsorbtion in the case of solid coatings. The SPME fiber is then inserted directly into the chromatograph for desorption and analysis. SPME has gained wide spread acceptance as the technique of preference for many applications including flavors and fragrances, forensics and toxicology, environmental and biological matrices, and product testing to name a few.
