Shifting the Paradigm in Routine GC-MS

At NACRW 2016, Paul Silcock, Thermo Fisher Scientific, spoke to SelectScience ® about the revolutionary effect of the Thermo Scientific Exactive™ GC Orbitrap™ GC-MS System. The system, which was first introduced in 2015, has been used in a range of research type applications, metabolomics, industrial as well as food safety.

In the video interview, Paul reveals how his team has found an unprecedented level of performance with this new technology, and how the new Exactive GC Orbitrap GC-MS System allows new opportunities for laboratories to redefine their routine work and differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Paul states that the Exactive GC Orbitrap GC-MS System offers high selectivity and high mass accuracy, producing consistent results on a day to day basis. Importantly, the system also has a large linear dynamic range, which enables quantitative analysis.

Furthermore, Paul highlights the importance of non-targeted analysis, which enables re-evaluation of the data produced when required, at any point in the future. This is particularly important when the Exactive GC Orbitrap GC-MS System is applied in food safety analysis, when a safety incident could result in the re-examination of the entire food chain.

The full scan method of analysis is also grow popularity in determining residue pesticide levels in foods, as it allows laboratories to capture incidents which could not be determined using traditional targeted methods.

Paul concludes that the Exactive GC Orbitrap GC-MS System opens up a whole host of opportunities for routine laboratories to broaden the scope of their analysis, and to carry out analysis in ways which they never thought possible before.
