Drug Discovery & Development Video Interview of the Year – in association with The Scientists’ Channel

This year’s winning video ‘Supporting science: Discover the technology enabling innovation communities in bioscience’ is an interview with Susie Harborth, Executive Vice President at Breakthrough Properties.

In this video, Harborth explains how a collaboration with PHCbi has been critical to her company's goal of delivering high-quality resources and environments that enable scientists to develop pioneering therapies, diagnostics and vaccinations.

Drug Discovery & Development Application eBook of the Year

The Drug Discovery & Development eBook of the Year Award goes to Horizon Discovery for ‘Advances in CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and screening technology'. This application compendium presents a guide to gene editing and functional genomics screening using Horizon Discovery’s Edit-R™ CRISPR genome engineering platform.

“We’re most appreciative of you selecting Horizon’s eBook, Advances in CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and screening technology, as the winner in this category. We feel particularly honored to support the research, drug discovery and development community during these extraordinary times.”
David Stegemeier, Product Marketing Specialist, Horizon Discovery

Drug Discovery & Development Editorial Article of the Year

This year’s winning article is titled ‘Clinical proteomics: Identifying biomarkers to predict patient risk of COVID-19’ and featured technology from Olink Proteomics.

In an exclusive interview, Prof. Leo Joosten, Head of Research, Department of Experimental Medicine, and Professor of Mechanisms of Inflammatory Disease at Radboudumc, Nijmegen, The Netherlands, discusses how his team is working to identify biomarkers of the disease, its mechanisms of infection and the impact of immune response, to ultimately search for possible treatments and vaccination approaches.

Drug Discovery & Development Webinar of the Year

This year’s Webinar of the Year is presented by Dr. Mark Argentine, Senior Research Advisor Lilly Research Laboratories at Eli Lilly and Company, in collaboration with Waters Corporation.

The webinar, titled ‘Developing impurities analytical methods with a quality by design approach’ and available to watch on demand, is intended as a masterclass in how risk-based approaches such as Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) and Method Lifecycle Management (MLCM) can be implemented to develop fit-for-purpose and robust methods that improve the control of impurities.

Drug Discovery & Development Email of the Year

The winner in the Email of the Year category goes to ‘New poster: The periodic table of antibodies', from Sartorius. The winning email featured a free download of the 'Periodic Table of Antibodies' and proved hugely popular with the SelectScience audience of scientists around the world.

Combinatorial ChemistryCombinatorial chemistry, also known as combichem, is a technique used in drug discovery to create libraries of structurally related compounds. A library is generated by synthesis with a chemical reactor system or by computer-based modeling of compound combinations. When undertaking combinatorial chemistry consider reagents, buffers, resins and standards.Lab-on-a-ChipLab-on-a-chip (LOC) technology uses microfluidic chips, such as microarrays, to perform biochemical assays on a small scale. Benefits of lab-on-a-chip include the small volume of sample required as well as the speed of analysis. In selecting lab-on-a-chip devices consider the assay, cost, reliability, sensitivity and signal to noise ratio.Compound LibrariesCompound libraries, or chemical libraries, are used in drug discovery for the identification of potential therapeutics compounds. Used in conjunction with high-throughput screening, the libraries of stored compounds are often generated for specific purposes as a drug target or disease model. Cheminformatics are commonly used when designing a compound library and software can be used to analyze the screening process.  Process ChemistryProcess chemistry is an important stage of drug development for scaling-up drug production or chemical synthesis reactions. It is useful for optimizing economical and efficient drug production. Process chemistry uses reactors and pump systems as well as reagents, standards and buffers.Biopharmaceutical AdvancesBiopharmaceutical advances follow the development of pharmaceuticals derived from biotechnology, also known as biotechnology medicines. Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from cell lines, plants, or microbial cells. Important considerations of biopharmaceutical use include application, cost, production process and purification.Plate ProcessingAutomated plate processing is used in microplate technologies for high-throughput, speed and efficiency. Plate processing systems include microplate handlers for moving plates, heat sealers, stackers and carousels for storage, retrieval and delivery, microplate washers and piercers. Useful features of plate processors include walk-away automation, compatibility and easy integration with microplate systems.GC-MS GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) instruments and equipment are used to separate, quantify and identify mixtures of small and volatile compounds, such as polycyclic aromatics, fatty acids and alcohols. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis.
