Suz12 is the mammalian homologue of the Drosophila Suppressor-of-Zeste 12 protein and a component of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2, a protein complex that is involved in the epigenetic silencing of gene expression through the modification of histones and the formation of facultative heterochromatin. The PRC2 complex also contains proteins that deacetylate histones (HDAC1 and HDAC2), as well as the histone H3 lysine-27 methyltransferase EZH2.
