RNA polymerase II is a complex of many proteins that catalyzes the transcription of most eukaryotic genes into mRNA. The large subunit of eukaryotic RNA polymerase II contains many copies of an essential heptad repeat (YSPTSPS) in its C-terminal domain. Serines in position 5 of the repeats are phosphorylated during transcriptional initiation.
