Quality Control of Building Materials Using the CAMSIZER XT

11 Mar 2013

No matter which type of building material, the particle size and shape of the raw materials influence the quality and performance of the end product, and therefore need to be analyzed as part of the quality control process. This application note discusses how particle shape influences product quality and demonstrates how the CAMSIZER XT can be used to reliably analyze both particle size and particle shape of fine powders. As an example, the analysis of sand for glass-reinforced plastic pipes is presented.

Particle CharacterizationParticle characterization instruments are used to determine particle size distribution, shape, surface area, zeta potential, density and porosity of particles and materials. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters.
