Push-Button Simplicity: Automatic Fermentation with the BioFlo 120 Auto Culture Mode

19 Jan 2018

In this application note, Eppendorf refers to the automated control modes and set points for common microbial and mammalian cultures. The auto-culture mode features on the BioFlo 120 bioprocess control station for initial success in experimental set-up, and is demonstrated here for batch process E.coli fermentation. The defined modes and set points can be manually adjusted to optimize the system to the user’s preference, and the system used for either batch, fed-batch, or continuous cultures with BioBLU single-use vessels or industry-standard glass vessels.

Software PlatformsSoftware platforms are useful for various stages of laboratory experiments from data collection to data storage and processing. For instance lab software is available for system control, data management, data analysis and qualification / validation.Bioprocessing / FermentationBioprocessing is the use of biological materials to perform commercial, scientific or medical research processes. Biological materials used include cells, enzymes and organisms. Usually bioprocessing requires a batch or continuous bioreactor such as a fermentor or cell culture system. The advantages of using a reactor include high productivity, easy configuration, adjustable values and automation.BioprocessingBioprocessing is the use of biological systems for the conversion of raw materials to desired products. This includes the research, development and manufacturing stages of production and can refer to food processing, small-molecule pharmaceutical manufacture, production of recombinant protein therapeutics, or the generation of renewable energy.Cell GrowthCell growth refers to the process by which cells increase in size and number. It is essential for tissue development, wound healing, and cancer research. Understanding and controlling cell growth is a fundamental part of cell biology and regenerative medicine.
