Purification of Vanillin by a Combination of Flash and Preparative HPLC with the PLC 2250
Purification of Vanillin by a Combination of Flash and Preparative HPLC with the PLC 2250
12 Aug 2015Vanillin, known best as the principle flavor component of vanilla extract, has been shown to exhibit some bioactive properties. Many phenolic compounds found in plants have been shown to exhibit analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antipyretic and immunomodulatory properties. The manual isolation of these compounds can be time-consuming, difficult, and lead to inconsistent results. This application note demonstrates an automated single platform solution for bulk flash purification and refined preparatory HPLC using the Gilson PLC 2250 for the purification of vanillin.

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. For more specialized HPLC, explore FPLC, countercurrent LC and simulated moving bed systems. Immunology kits and analysis systems often use techniques such as ELISA, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunodiffusion assays, Immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Immunologists use equipment such as flow Cytometers, plate readers, plate washers and fluorescent microscopes.PurificationPurification techniques are essential for isolating compounds of interest from complex mixtures, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and chemicals. These techniques are critical in biochemistry, drug development, and environmental studies.
