Moisture in petroleum products according to ASTM D6304

17 Dec 2021

In this white paper, Metrohm explains the easy determination of moisture in petroleum samples by coulometric Karl Fischer titration according to the three procedures outlined in ASTM Method D6304. A comparison is given between the procedures to determine which is most suitable for different sample types.

851 Titrando Coulometer

The coulometric Karl Fischer Titration is the method of choice for low level water determinations (10 μg … 10 mg absolute water content) in liquid, solid and gaseous samples. As it is an absolute method a titer determination is not necessary. With the 851 Titrando coulometric titrations are carried out straightforwardly and quickly.

Environmental Monitoring and TestingEnvironmental monitoring and testing uses handheld portable analyzers, kits, spectrometers or chromatography systems for air, water, soil, food and other sample testing. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.TitrationTitration is an analytical technique for determining substance concentration in a solution. For titration consider a manual or automated system, volumetric or coulometric reagent addition and indication by a potentiometer, spectrometer, turbidometer or by the Karl Fischer method. Other features of titration to consider include burettes, reagents, concentration range, reaction time and autosamplers.PetroleumMoisture Analysis
