Mobile-Phase Cleanup Using Solid-Phase Extraction Disks

16 Jun 2011

In this comprehensive application note from 3M the authors describe a fast, simple procedure for purifying HPLC mobile phase using solid-phase extraction disks during the filtration step for mobile-phase preparation. The procedure tested was found to remove more than 95% of contaminants, and has been suggested as an effective and suitable solution for various gradient HPLC methods.

3M™ Empore™ SDB-XC 47 mm Disk

3M Bioanalytical

SDB-XC is a poly(styrenedivinylbenzene) copolymer used as a reversed phase sorbent for solid phase extraction.  SDB-XC is not bonded to silica but is a 100% copolymeric particle that is spherical, porous and cross-linked.  It does not exhibit the secondary cationic (silanol) interactions and pH limitations common to bonded silica sorbents, so it offers more predictable and reproducible reversed phase interaction.

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats.
