Micropumps for Cell Culturing and Tissue Engineering

19 Jan 2011

This application note shows that the mp6 micropump provides a unique solution for active cell culturing by combining a smooth flow profile and widely adjustable flow rates together with robustness and compatibility with cell culturing media. It also shows that cell cultures with active perfusion can be run for more than three weeks in total.

Bartels Mikrotechnik GmbH

From Bartels Mikrotechnik GmbH, the Micropump Mp6 offers no space for compromises.  The mp6 is the smallest serial produced piezoelectric diaphragm pump made from plastic on the market. With flow rates up to 6 ml/minute and back pressures of 550 mbar the double actuator micropump offers universal capabilities for liquids and gases. The pump is ingeniously simple and its advantages are next to the small size and low weight its robustness, long lifetime, high reliability and unbeatable cost effectiveness. The pump is driven via frequency and amplitude allowing flexible adjustment at low energy consumption, also as battery powered version for use in portable devices.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. The pressures/vacuums generated are determined by the type of pump used. High vacuum pumps include diffusion, ion, roots and turbopumps; for primary/medium vacuum applications see rotary vane pumps, scroll & diaphragm pumps. For the positive displacement of liquids explore a range of syringe and peristaltic pumps, as well as fluid aspirators.
