Methane and Carbon Dioxide Sensing for Biogas Applications
5 Jun 2013Anaerobic Digestion plants produce various gas components from a source material (or feedstock) that can be composed either solely or as a mixture of slurries, purpose-grown crops, food and organic waste material. It is normal to measure various components of the resultant gas produced to evaluate the efficiency of the Anaerobic Digestion process. This application note describes and OEM sensing solution for measuring methane or carbon dioxide.

Infrared / IR SpectroscopyInfrared (IR) spectroscopy measures the interaction of infrared light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance & absorbance, facilitating the identification of analytes. Equipment used for quantitative analysis includes Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, infrared cameras, FTIR gas analyzers, as well as attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessories and pellet or film presses. Gas analyzers can be used in supply chain processes and laboratory experiments with portable analyzers for monitoring CO2 and O2 levels as well as trace gases. Regular flow can be produced with gas control modules and flow meters. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity. Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.Carbon DioxideAir SamplingAir sampling is described as the technique used to capture air for the subsequent purpose of analyzing, typically by thermal desorption, the presence of trace particulates, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
