Manual extraction of PFAS in drinking water in compliance with EPA Method 537.1

11 Aug 2021

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have been used abundantly since their inception in the twentieth century and have become a closely monitored class of compounds within environmental testing. This application note outlines a procedure for those seeking to become compliant with EPA Method 537.1. The data presented was generated using a Biotage® VacMaster™ vacuum manifold with a Large Volume Extraction (LVE) kit designed for PFAS work in conjunction with ISOLUTE® 101 SPE columns and a TurboVap® LV system. This note will demonstrate that the solution outlined is capable of generating data which exceeds the requirements outlined within the 537.1 method.

TurboVap® Family of Automated Solvent Evaporators

Biotage

TurboVap® evaporators automate nitrogen blowdown for fast, efficient solvent evaporation—up to 10x faster than traditional methods. With flexible configurations and modular manifolds, they handle diverse sample volumes and applications including SVOCs, pesticides, PCBs, and PAHs.

Environmental Monitoring and TestingEnvironmental monitoring and testing uses handheld portable analyzers, kits, spectrometers or chromatography systems for air, water, soil, food and other sample testing. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.Solid-Phase ExtractionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for clean-up, extraction and concentration of semi-volatile or non-volatile analytes from complex mixtures including blood, urine and food samples. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. Find the best SPE, SLE and SPME equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.EPA MethodsEPA methods are procedures approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for monitoring and analyzing environmental pollutants, including air, water, and soil samples. These methods are critical in ensuring public health and environmental safety. It is widely used in environmental, pharmaceutical, and clinical analysis. SPE provides higher sensitivity and selectivity compared to traditional liquid-liquid extraction methods, making it essential for accurate and reproducible results.
