Implementing CIMS for Process Operations: Goal Is to Integrate Analytical Capabilities with Bioreactor or Fermentor Control Software
12 Mar 2014Comprehensive information management systems (CIMS) help bioprocessing professionals to manage increasingly large data sets about mammalian cell cultivation and microbial fermentation processes. This article describes how Dasgip’s information-management system, DASware, has aided the work of scientist at Lonza and Gevo. The system is designed to allow interconnectivity among bioreactors and external lab devices, with comprehensive data and information management, factorial design of experiments, and remote control of bioprocesses.

Data AnalysisData analysis hardware and software is available to make data processing straight-forward yet powerful. Data software can be used for math and stats, technical graphing and image analysis. In addition, software is available for specific data analysis of electrophoresis, densitometry, ELISA and DNA sequencing.Bioprocessing / FermentationBioprocessing is the use of biological materials to perform commercial, scientific or medical research processes. Biological materials used include cells, enzymes and organisms. Usually bioprocessing requires a batch or continuous bioreactor such as a fermentor or cell culture system. The advantages of using a reactor include high productivity, easy configuration, adjustable values and automation.BioprocessingBioprocessing is the use of biological systems for the conversion of raw materials to desired products. This includes the research, development and manufacturing stages of production and can refer to food processing, small-molecule pharmaceutical manufacture, production of recombinant protein therapeutics, or the generation of renewable energy.
