Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue preservation is a method that was first developed 125 years ago to maintain tissue morphology. With the advent of DNA sequencing and other modern molecular methods in the past few decades, there has been great demand to extract DNA and RNA from FFPE tissue. However, FFPE is an imperfect sample type for such analyses because the nucleic acids are often highly degraded and cross-linked to proteins, as a result of the fixation process.
