Determination of Virginiamycin, Erythromycin, and Penicillin in Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles

14 May 2014

The FDA has raised concern over food producing animals consuming distillers grains with antibiotic residues, and how this may lead to increased antibiotic resistance in humans and animals. This application note describes a method to determine erythromycin, penicillin, and virginiamycin S1 and M1 in dried distillers grains with solubles using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. They are essential in the treatment of infections and in preventing disease spread. Biological safety cabinets and sterilization equipment are examples of technologies used to prevent contamination.Food FraudFood adulteration refers to food when it has been has been altered unlawfully with the addition of another lower commodity food product to increase quantity. The 2013 European horsemeat scandal saw the adulteration of beef products with the addition of horse meat.
