Determination of NCO% in polyurethane polymers using FT-NIR spectroscopy
1 Aug 2019Polyurethane polymers are used in the manufacture of foams, inks, adhesives, synthetic fibers, and plastics are traditionally and most commonly formed by reacting an isocyanate with a polyol. The progress of the reaction can be followed by measuring the NCO%. FT-NIR is an attractive alternative as it allows users to perform rapid determination of NCO% in polyurethanes in a fast and non-destructive manner. In this application note, ABB Analytical Measurements illustrates the use of an ABB FT-NIR instrument for fast determination of NCO% in polyurethane polymer.

Near Infrared SpectroscopyNear-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy measures the interaction of near-infrared light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance and absorbance, facilitating the identification of analytes. Measurements can be conducted using a Fourier-transform near infrared (FT-NIR) spectrometer, while there are also UV-Vis- NIR spectrophotometers that measure a broader spectrum of wavelengths. Natural polymers such as DNA and proteins are essential to life, whereas synthetic polymers such as polystyrene and polyethylene are used widely due to their functionality. Typical techniques for analysis include GPC, SEC, DSC, FT-IR and NMR.SpectroscopySpectroscopy is a technique that analyzes the interaction of light with matter to study molecular properties, concentrations, and structural information. Widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental analysis, spectroscopy offers insights into molecular composition and helps identify unknown compounds. It plays a key role in quality control, research, and diagnostics. Browse our peer-reviewed product directory to compare spectroscopy tools, read reviews, and get prices directly from manufacturers.
