Continuous measurement of radon concentration in water

30 Sept 2019

As stated in the ALARA principle, all exposures to ionizing radiation shall be kept “as low as reasonably achievable”, especially to prevent health issues. Indeed, radon exposure can represent a serious health risk if it is ingested through drinking water or food. Several studies, such as the Risk Assessment of Radon in Drinking Water report published by the National Academy of Sciences for the United States Environmental Protection Agency, look at radon intake as risk factor for several types of cancer. Drinking contaminated water, for example, can result in stomach cancer whereas lung cancer can be associated with breathing radon and its radioactive byproducts in indoor air. To address this issue, Bertin has developed the Radon Exchange Module 1 to perform a continuous measurement of radon concentration in water and prevent an exceedance of limit value.
