Complying with EPA Method 1664A by Automated Solid Phase Extraction Utilizing the SPE-DEX® 4790 with Envision® Platform v1.02
10 Dec 2014The purpose of this application note is to demonstrate the viability of a solid phase extraction method utilizing the Horizon Technology SPE-DEX® 4790 Extractor with the Envision® Platform software version 1.02 to extract samples for EPA Method 1664A and fulfill all QC requirements. EPA Method 1664A is a performance based method which is used to find the total n-hexane extractable material and the silica-gel treated n-hexane extractable material within a sample. The method specifically outlines the steps needed to perform the liquid liquid extraction and details the process to determine if an alternative method may be used.

Solid-Phase ExtractionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for clean-up, extraction and concentration of semi-volatile or non-volatile analytes from complex mixtures including blood, urine and food samples. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats.
