Characterizing the Hydrothermal Behavior of Starch with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis

31 Jul 2012

This application note explores the use of immersion-mode material pocket dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) as a tool to investigate the structural changes associated with starch gelatinization. The experiment was carried out using the DMA 8000 instrument with the mechanically inert Material Pocket which allows straightforward, reproducible analysis of powders with DMA, which removes the difficulty in handling powdered and granular materials in mechanical tests.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. Thermal analysis equipment includes differential scanning calorimeters (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzers (TGA), thermomechanical analyzers (TMA), dilatometers, thermometers, vapor sorption analyzers, boiling and melting point apparatus. Thermal analyzers can reveal properties such as melting, crystallization and glass transitions or other processes such as oxidation, decomposition, volatilization, as well as coefficients of thermal expansion and modulus.
