Cell engineering in picodroplets

18 Jun 2023

Picodroplet microfluidics is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for single-cell analysis, providing an easy-to-use tool to encapsulate single cells in picolitre-volume aqueous droplets (picodroplets) at high throughput rates of thousands of droplets per second. This powerful and sensitive technique offers significant cost and efficiency advantages. An additional advantage of this approach is that picodroplets provide a cell friendly culturing environment. Depending on the assay and application of interest, cells can be cultured in these picodroplets for a couple hours, to up to several days. The ability to culture the cells for various lengths of time has opened opportunities for a wide range of applications including antibody discovery, cell line cloning and cell engineering. In this application note, Sphere Bio provides an overview of how picodroplets can be used in cell engineering.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins.
