Best practices for monitoring PFAS contamination in a routine shared-space commercial laboratory

11 Jun 2023

In this whitepaper, Waters proposes a stepwise approach to control per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in shared-space laboratories. PFAS are toxic to humans, animals and the environment therefore effectively controlling contamination is important. The protocol involves rigorous washing and testing. It includes ensuring the LC-MS/MS system is PFAS-free, testing the reconstitution solution, and examining plastic collection tubes and the nitrogen evaporator. Methanol with the lowest PFAS level is used for washing labware and in the SPE procedure. Clean consumable items are reused, and a full wash procedure is repeated for permanent items between sample batches. This approach effectively minimizes PFAS contamination in the lab.

Environmental Monitoring and TestingEnvironmental monitoring and testing uses handheld portable analyzers, kits, spectrometers or chromatography systems for air, water, soil, food and other sample testing. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.Contamination PreventionContamination prevention aims to control and minimize the risk of contamination during experiments. Biological safety cabinets and sterilization equipment are examples of technologies used to prevent contamination.Water AnalysisAnalytical methods used to test the purity of drinking water include determining the level of contaminants abides to the level set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Environmental AnalysisEnvironmental analysis describes a variety of tests that determine the effect of chemicals, processes and particulates such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have on the environment.
