Authentication of Vanilla Extracts by Convergence Chromatography
1 Jun 2014The Waters® ACQUITY UPC2 System utilizes CO2 mobile phases along with organic co-solvent and additives to provide orthogonal selectivity to that of RPLC. For the analysis of vanilla extracts, this separation technique provides greater retention of highly polar, secondary components of vanillin while providing adequate retention and identification of non-polar adulterants. In addition, this chromatographic technique allows for improved efficiency and lower solvent usage than traditional RPLC methods, while providing a high-throughput, sensitive screening method for the analysis of vanilla extracts.

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. By varying mobile phase strength, pressure, temperature and stationary phase Convergence Chromatography facilitates the separation, detection and quantification of many compounds and samples. The CO2< / sub> mobile phase used reduces the need for toxic solvents.Convergence ChromatographyFood FraudFood adulteration refers to food when it has been has been altered unlawfully with the addition of another lower commodity food product to increase quantity. The 2013 European horsemeat scandal saw the adulteration of beef products with the addition of horse meat.
