Artel MVS as a Tool For Measuring Liquid Mixing Efficacy in Microplates

26 Mar 2021

Homogeneity of solutions in microplates plays a crucial role in assay effectiveness, yet is an area of assay method development and verification that is often overlooked. Without ensuring that solutions have been effectively mixed, it is possible for non‐homogenous samples to be used for subsequent assay steps leading to aspiration of very concentrated or very dilute aliquots. For assay results to be truly trustworthy, every part of the methodology employed needs to be assessed for efficacy and repeatability. This application note describes how the ARTEL MVS® Multichannel Verification System can be used as a tool for measuring the efficacy of liquid mixing protocols.

Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.MicroplatesMicroplates are multi-well plates used to increase the throughput of biological investigations. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Lab equipment for sample homogenization includes handheld and benchtop homogenizers, bead mill, ultrasonic and multiple sample homogenizers, high shear homogenizers and blenders. Homogenizer bead and probe multipacks are available to avoid cross contamination of samples, as well as cooling systems for homogenizing temperature-sensitive samples. Homogenizers are often used in the first step of extraction of DNA, RNA and proteins from tissue and cell samples.
