Industry news

By acquiring Halo Labs, Waters will be able to integrate its emerging technology into new and existing large molecule development and QA/QC, giving a key value-add to customers while accelerating the company's growth into analytical and bioprocessing testing for large molecule therapies.

The Aura platform from Halo Labs features a highly differentiated technology that performs full spectrum particle analysis and is complementary to the Waters light scattering detection solutions from its Wyatt TechnologyPortfolio. For example, its subvisible particle technology unlocks additional insights when characterizing external particles used to amplify CAR T-cells for cell therapy, detecting these translucent process impurities that are currently undetectable by standard methods.

"Adding the innovative low-sample-volume, high-throughput technology from Halo Labs provides analysis for a broad range of sample types and volumes, enabling earlier insights during therapy development and greater safety during manufacturing," said Dr. Udit Batra, President and Chief Executive Officer, Waters Corporation.

"With the rapid growth of treatments like CAR T-cell therapies, we are investing in the innovation our customers need. Together with our existing Wyatt Technology product lines, this acquisition enhances our leadership position in specialized analytical technologies for emerging biopharma therapies," he added.

"We are thrilled to join forces with Waters, a company that shares our values of purposeful innovation and customer focus," said Rick Gordon, Chief Executive Officer, Halo Labs. "This combination accelerates our vision to expand our platform's reach, enhancing therapeutic development and production while maintaining our unwavering commitment to drug quality and safety. We look forward to driving more ground-breaking advancements that benefit patients worldwide."

Halo Labs

Aura® is the particle and aggregate detection system that combines Backgrounded Membrane Imaging which images 100% of your sample to give you count, size, and morphological information, with up to 2 channels of Fluorescence Membrane Microscopy. Identify if particles are protein or not with the first FMM channel and determine if your sample contains lipids, hydrophobic entities, or other aggregates of your choice with a second.

Flow Cytometry / Cell CountingFlow cytometers are used to count, sort and examine multiple characteristics of cells. Other cell analysis equipment includes image cytometers, cell counters, fluorescence-activated cell sorters (FACS), magnetic-activated cell sorters (MACS), and a range of flow cytometry assay kits. Flow cytometers can reveal information on cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle progression, as well as identify cell populations and intracellular or cell-surface molecules. Additionally, some flow cytometers, known as FACS, have an additional sorting function after analysis. Cell counters and image cytometers count live and dead cell populations and can also conduct cell proliferation assays. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.Cell-Based AssaysCell-based assays are used to monitor the presence, quantity and activities of a desired cellular analyte including drug molecules or biomarkers. This can reveal information on cell health (apoptosis, cytotoxicity, viability and proliferation assays), cell metabolism, cell migration and cell signaling mechanisms. The most well known example of a biopharmaceutical product, and the first to be approved for therapeutic use, was recombinant human insulin.Quality ControlQuality control is needed in all production processes. Quality control is a monitoring procedure or set of procedures that are put in place to ensure that a manufactured product adheres to a defined set of quality criteria. CAR-T cell therapy
