The CompacT SelecT™ automated cell culture system from The Automation Partnership (TAP) has been installed at a new US defence facility in order to produce high quality, assay-ready mammalian cell lines in containment conditions. This will enable the culture of many cell lines in parallel without risking cross contamination.

The CompacT SelecT system sited at this US biodefence campus, part of a foremost medical research centre, will be used for unattended culturing of high quality, assay-ready mammalian cell lines. The system will allow researchers at the facility to safely maintain cells in flasks, as well as standard and transport assay plates, by making programmed media changes in the flasks and plates, all without any manual intervention. The system uses sophisticated tracking to record all processing steps and means researchers can verify the contents of each sample, which is crucial in this facility.

Tim Ward, Director of Cell Culture at TAP explained: “The biodefence facility wanted an automated cell culture system that closely mimicked the centre’s manual handling processes, so that their scientists would not need to make fundamental workflow changes to accommodate the automation into their research. As an established technology proven to successfully culture a wide range of different cell types, they felt confident in choosing CompacT SelecT to help them transition from manual to automated cell culture, while ensuring the quality of cell lines and their personal safety.”

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. Such processes use instruments for assays like cell based assays and ELISA, for sample preparation like shakers, centrifuges and incubators, and for analysis such as sequencing and western blot analyzers. Useful features of robotic instruments include speed, reproducibility, barcode readers, software and automation.Plate ProcessingAutomated plate processing is used in microplate technologies for high-throughput, speed and efficiency. Plate processing systems include microplate handlers for moving plates, heat sealers, stackers and carousels for storage, retrieval and delivery, microplate washers and piercers. Useful features of plate processors include walk-away automation, compatibility and easy integration with microplate systems.
