Burden and management of viral respiratory infections in the pediatric population: What the COVID-19 pandemic has changed

The role of cycle threshold values in infectious disease diagnostics

Viral infections are the largest major cause of respiratory diseases in children. Clinical severity can range from asymptomatic or mild infections to severe or fatal outcomes. Moreover, a wide variety of viral pathogens can cause upper and/or lower respiratory tract infections. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the pattern and severity of viral infections as well as the view of healthcare stake holders on viral diseases. In this webinar, the burden and management of viral respiratory tract infections in the pediatric population will be discussed, and the presentation will be illustrated by clinical cases.

Managing doubly charged rare earth element interferences in single quadrupole and triple quadrupole ICP-MS

New on-demand webinar: The role of lactate in early sepsis identification: Experiences from intensive care

Of the three types of spectroscopic interferences in ICP-MS (polyatomic, isobaric, and doubly charged), there is a greater focus on doubly charged due to the use of rare earth elements (REE’s) for high technology devices. However, there are concerns with using REE’s, as the process of mining them may potentially lead to an increase in leaching into various water sources, soils and uptake by plant materials. Collision/reaction cell (CRC) technology has successfully reduced most polyatomic interferences. Isobaric interferences may be avoided using alternate isotopes, and in most cases, doubly charged interferences can also be avoided using alternate isotopes. However, in some cases, no isotope exists that is completely free of doubly charged interferences.

In this webinar, Craig Jones, ICP-MS Application Scientist at Agilent Technologies, will discuss the procedures to correct for doubly charged interferences using equations with half mass correction using single quad ICP-MS, and the utilization of triple quad ICP-MS technology using reactive gases to eliminate the bias when doubly charged elements are present.

Miniaturized high-throughput transcriptomics for preclinical drug discovery

From basement to bedside: Leveraging laboratory expertise to improve clinical outcomes through diagnostic stewardship

In this webinar, Ian Shoemaker and Kelly Parliament from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences will share how the Echo® 655T instrument, an acoustic liquid handler, allows for miniaturization of the drug screening process through the rapid and accurate transfer of compounds at volumes as low as 2.5 nL without the use of plastic tips. They will also explain how bulk RNA barcoding and sequencing (BRB-seq) enables the use of high-throughput RNA library preparation and sequencing by drastically reducing price and preparation time through the utilization of RNA barcoding and multiplexed library preparation.
