1. Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Launches Xprecia Stride Coagulation Analyzer

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics introduced a first-of-its-kind, hand-held portable coagulation analyzer. The Xprecia Stride Coagulation Analyzer delivers fast, reliable Prothrombin time testing (PT/INR) for point-of-care monitoring and management of oral anticoagulation therapy with warfarin, a vitamin K antagonist.

2. 7 Hot New Technologies for Cancer Research

Read the latest news from this year's American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting in Philadelphia including a new quantitative imaging system, advances in cloud computing solutions for researchers and the winners of the Life Science Scientists' Choice award® for Best New Life Science Product of 2014.

3. A Polyclonal v Monoclonal Approach to FLC Measurement

There were many interesting talks at the recent Clinical Applications of Free Light Chain and Heavy/Light Chain Analysis International Symposium, held in Edinburgh, UK. Dr Robert Lock, Consultant Clinical Scientist, Immunology & Immunogenetics, North Bristol NHS Trust, UK, addressed the delegation on a Polyclonal v Monoclonal Approach to Free Light Chain (FLC) Measurement. His presentation detailed comparisons between the different monoclonal and polyclonal assays available on the market.

4. Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer: Medical University of Vienna Demonstrates ANGLE’s ‘Blood Biopsy’ Technology

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna presented a scientific poster at the American Association of Cancer Research Annual meeting, detailing a protocol combining the novel microfluidic Parsortix™ technology with qPCR, to enable the molecular analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) implicated in ovarian and breast cancer. The Parsortix system is currently research use only, and not for use as an in vitro diagnostic.

5. New Study in the Clinical Biochemistry Journal Identifies the Precise Magnitude of Change in Cardiac Troponin Required for Early Diagnosis of a Heart Attack

Beckman Coulter Diagnostics announced the publication of research results in the Clinical Biochemistry journal that identifies the precise magnitude of change in cardiac troponin required for early diagnosis of a heart attack (myocardial infarction, or MI), utilizing its Access AccuTnI+3 troponin I blood test.

6. New Affordable Advanced NGS Cancer Test Launched by EKF Subsidiary

EKF Diagnostics subsidiary, Selah Genomics, announced the launch of its next generation sequencing (NGS) technology PrecisionPath™ in partnership with Greenville Health Systems (GHS), one of the leading community-based cancer Institutes in the US. For the first time, patients will have wider access to affordable advanced NGS testing that can help doctors determine the most effective cancer treatments based on an individual’s genetic profile.

7. 6 Exclusive Clinical Interviews

SelectScience regularly interviews thought-leading scientists from around the world to bring you the latest advances in clinical diagnostics. In this article, we look at the most popular of our recent interviews including discussions on celiac disease, molecular diagnostics in microbiology, and ways of combating the rise of antibiotic resistance.

8. QIAGEN Partners with World’s Largest Sequencing Provider

QIAGEN N.V. recently announced that it has expanded its relationship with BGI, the world’s largest genomics organization, to provide QIAGEN’s Ingenuity® Variant Analysis™ in integrated bioinformatics for all customers of BGI’s sequencing services.

Blood TransfusionBlood Transfusion involves giving donor blood to a recipient patient. Screening is essential to avoid transfusion reactions. Blood banks use immunohematological techniques to determine rh and ABO blood group, and screen for antibodies using specific antisera. Blood Banks use Direct Coombs Tests (DCT) and Indirect Coombs Tests (IAT) to detect hemolysis and Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN).HematologyIn Haematology / Hematology, complete blood cell counts (or full blood counts) are obtained using automated blood count analyzers to enumerate blood cell types.  Hematology also encompasses haemostasis and coagulation, thrombophilia and hemophilia, plasma viscosity and ESR analysis, hemoglobinopathies, cell morphology and haematinic measurement.ImmunologyImmunological techniques measure and characterize immune responses. Immunology kits and analysis systems often use techniques such as ELISA, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunodiffusion assays, Immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Immunologists use equipment such as flow Cytometers, plate readers, plate washers and fluorescent microscopes.Point-of-CarePoint-of-Care Testing (POCT) or Near Patient Testing (NPT) products are available for urine, blood and other clinical chemistry analyses. POCT includes: blood glucose testing, blood gas and electrolytes analysis, rapid coagulation testing (PT / INR), rapid cardiac markers diagnostics, drugs of abuse screening, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, fecal occult blood analysis, food pathogens screening, hemoglobin diagnostics, infectious disease testing and cholesterol screening.Clinical ChemistryBiochemistry (or clinical chemistry) involves the analysis of bodily fluids using chemical tests. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.Clinical GeneticsMolecular Genetics covers the analysis of hereditary genetic disease and chromosomal abnormalities. Genetics can be analysed using DNA, RNA, and protein microarrays, PCR, RT PCR and DNA sequencing. Genetic equipment includes genetic workstations, thermal cyclers, cooling blocks and electrophoresis products. Diagnostic kits are used for DNA / RNA extraction and purification.Clinical MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. In vitro fertilization (IVF) refers to the fertilization of the egg outside of the human body, and is an important treatment for infertility.Cancer DiagnosticsThere are a wide variety of diagnostic tests for cancer available, and this range continues to expand as our knowledge of cancer improves. Current diagnostic methods include biopsy, imaging and blood tests for known biomarkers. New methods in research development include liquid biopsies and cancer breathalyzers.Liquid BiopsiesLiquid biopsies are non-invasive tests used to detect cancer and other diseases by analyzing blood or other bodily fluids. This technique is gaining popularity for early detection, monitoring treatment response, and detecting minimal residual disease.
