Product news

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has developed a complete suite of Thermo Scientific UV-Visible and fluorescence analytical solutions for the life science industry. From routine UV-Vis absorbance to chemiluminescence, the comprehensive product offering has been specifically designed to allow life science, pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories to make sensitive, reliable measurements faster and easier. In addition, Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched an informative new microsite, available at www.thermo.com/easyassay, to provide detailed information on the expanded portfolio.

Thermo Scientific has an established reputation for producing high quality UV-Vis spectrophotometers that spans over 60 years and over 650,000 units. Most recently, this extensive experience has resulted in the development of the BioMate 6 double-beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The instrument produces fast, accurate results for a wide range of life science applications, from routine nucleic acid and protein quantitation to research quality enzyme kinetics assays. The BioMate 6 can be upgraded with a variety of accessories to provide precise temperature control, automation, multi-cell analysis and small volume sampling. A flexible oligo calculator feature has also been incorporated to calculate molecular weight, theoretical Tm and the oligo concentration factor.

The Thermo Scientific UV-Vis product offering has been further enhanced with the addition of a new certified DNA standard to verify nucleic acid concentration measurements at 260 nm and purity assessments made using the 260/280 ratio. Often many steps are involved in the synthesis of nucleic acid samples, sometimes resulting in very low yield reactions. This standard provides assurance that the spectrophotometer is providing precise concentration and purity measurements. Developed in an NVLAB 17025 certified laboratory, the standard mimics the spectral features of nucleic acid samples and provides a certified absorption at 260 nm, regardless of the instrument bandwidth. Moreover, a certified absorbance at 280 nm allows a certified 260/280 ratio.

Another addition to the Thermo Scientific suite of UV-Visible and fluorescence products is the Quantech™ Digital Filter fluorometer, which delivers accurate and sensitive fluorescence measurements, whether it is for the simple analysis of fluorescein or a more complex FRET biological assay. A filter fluorometer provides enhanced sensitivity over monochromator-based scanning instruments, at a fraction of the cost. For researchers who measure concentration by fluorescence or are only interested in the total emission of their sample, the Quantech Digital Filter fluorometer is a cost-effective, reliable solution. This compact fluorometer saves valuable bench space and offers storage capabilities for up to nine calibration curves in the internal memory.

Fluorescence SpectroscopyFluorometers and spectrofluorometers (also called fluorescence spectrometers) are used to measure the intensity and wavelength of fluorescent light emitted from a sample after excitation by illumination. Spectrofluorometers utilize monochromators to select the desired wavelengths, whereas filter fluorometers employ a set of filters. Spectrofluorometers for measuring steady-state fluorescence and lifetime fluorescence (or time-resolved fluorescence) are available, as well as fluorescence microscopes and microplate readers. The two major instrument classes are single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. More specialized equipment includes colorimeters, spectroradiometers and refractometers. Portable and microvolume spectrophotometers are also available. For the modular spectroscopy lab, explore a range of light sources for combination with a spectrograph/spectrometer and optics. Oligonucleotides can be made via enzymatic cleavage or more commonly by chemical synthesis with polymerases. Their use includes FISH, southern blots, microarrays and as primers in PCR. High fidelity synthesis kits and detection systems are available for easy production and detection, respectively.Cell-Based AssaysCell-based assays are used to monitor the presence, quantity and activities of a desired cellular analyte including drug molecules or biomarkers. This can reveal information on cell health (apoptosis, cytotoxicity, viability and proliferation assays), cell metabolism, cell migration and cell signaling mechanisms. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations. The purification process typically involves subcellular or membrane protein extraction with cell lysis kits, separation of proteins from cell debris by filtration or spin columns, and the isolation of proteins of interest from other proteins and impurities with affinity purification (including fusion protein tags and antibody binding proteins A, G and L), immunoprecipitation or chromatographic methods, such as ion exchange, size exclusion and immobilized metal affinity chromatography. All purification methods come in multiple formats for your laboratory needs, including agarose or magnetic beads, resins, columns and filter plates.
