Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces New µDrop Plate for Low-Volume Measurements

20 Oct 2011

Product news

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a world leader in serving science, today announced the new Thermo Scientific µDrop Plate for the quick and easy measurement of samples down to 2 µL. The µDrop™ Plate provides a straightforward way of analyzing up to 16 microliter-scale samples simultaneously. The fixed light path of the plate allows direct calculation of nucleic acid concentrations of the samples.

Furthermore, users can detect dsDNA from a few micrograms to a few milligrams per milliliter, without needing to perform any dilutions. These characteristics are designed to make the µDrop Plate an ideal tool for photometric DNA or RNA quantitation and purity analysis. The company showcased the µDrop Plate at the Thermo Scientific booth in hall 9, stand G53 during Biotechnica 2011, held 11-13 October 2011 in Hannover, Germany.

Samples are easily pipetted onto the µDrop Plate using a single- or eight-channel pipette. The plate is easily wiped clean, making it convenient for serial measurements. Additionally, the µDrop Plate is equipped with a cuvette slot, enabling endpoint, spectral and kinetic measurements in a standard rectangular cuvette.

The µDrop Plate has been designed for use with the Thermo Scientific Multiskan GO UV/Vis microplate and cuvette spectrophotometer, as well as the Thermo Scientific Varioskan Flash spectral scanning multimode reader. This extends their capabilities to include micro-scale absorbance measurements.

There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.MicroplatesMicroplates are multi-well plates used to increase the throughput of biological investigations. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications.
