Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the availability of a new Thermo Scientific Atlas Chromatography Data System (CDS) instrument control software for the Shimadzu Prominence® and Prominence XR HPLC. Seamless control of Shimadzu’s Prominence is now possible at no extra cost as no connection license is required. Award-winning Atlas CDS™ provides chromatographers with a client/server chromatography-based software solution available for controlling multi-vendor instruments.

Within regulated industries, data management is a crucial part of the quality control process. Consequently, there is great demand for a single CDS that can integrate chromatographs from a variety of manufacturers. In response to customer needs and current market demand, Thermo Fisher and Shimadzu have collaborated to provide full instrument control and chromatography data handling within Atlas for the Shimadzu Prominence; a network-ready HPLC.

The new Shimadzu Prominence (20A) LC control allows the Shimadzu Prominence systems to be used with Atlas software with seamless control, supporting up to four instruments per 247 IC or DataServer. The Shimadzu Prominence (20A) control provides an instrument status screen, delivering direct feedback to the user on current instrument conditions. Developed with the Atlas DDK (device development kit), the control follows the user interface design followed by the Shimadzu VP instruments. The Shimadzu Prominence is a LAN-based instrument and can be connected to the laboratory network or private instrument network to provide data integrity by network buffering.

“We have received numerous requests from customers who use our LC and GC systems to enable control with Atlas CDS. I am pleased to see that control of Prominence is now possible through collaboration between Thermo Fisher and Shimadzu. This milestone will certainly benefit our mutual customers, and we look forward to continuing our relationship to further extend the control capability,” said Teruhisa Ueda, Ph.D., corporate officer and deputy general manager, Analytical and Measuring Instruments Division, Shimadzu Corporation.

Thermo Scientific Atlas CDS provides a highly scalable client/server environment for laboratory LAN and WAN networks in pharmaceutical drug development, discovery, QA/QC laboratories and academia, as well as process industries such as oil and gas, food and beverage safety, water and wastewater treatment and chemicals manufacturing. Designed as a multi-user, multi-instrument data system, it enables remote network access to many instruments so data can be fully collected, secured and protected – enabling organizations to make more informed decisions faster. In addition, Atlas CDS provides seamless integration of results with enterprise-wide laboratory informatics management systems applications including the full range of Thermo Scientific LIMS.

AutosamplersAutosamplers are automated sample loaders used with a number of separation and analytical techniques. HPLC autosamplers use automated partial or full-loop injection systems and place samples in vials or microplates for analysis. Autosamplers can also be used for elemental analysis. Features to consider include repeatability, syringe capacity, footprint and temperature controls.  UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.Data AnalysisData analysis hardware and software is available to make data processing straight-forward yet powerful. Data software can be used for math and stats, technical graphing and image analysis. In addition, software is available for specific data analysis of electrophoresis, densitometry, ELISA and DNA sequencing.LIMSLIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) is an informatics software system used to improve the quality assurance and quality control (QA / QC) of data management. LIMS can be a standard for common lab workflows, such as commercial off the shelf systems (COTS), or customized for more specialized lab use. Systems are available for mainframe computers or PC.Preparative ChromatographyPreparative chromatography equipment is used for purification purposes, separating and collecting compounds eluted from a mixture which can then be subsequently used for further purposes. This can be done in large quantities or small. Preparative chromatography systems are usually low to medium pressure liquid chromatographs that are semi-automated. Data mining software, databases, reference materials and storage packages are available to process lab data.NanoLCNano LC is a nano scale liquid chromatography technique typically used for proteomic applications. The nano refers to the very low flow rate of the mobile phase in the system. The advantage of nanoLC is its high sensitivity. Often the system is integrated with a mass spectrometer in nano LC-MS or nano LC-MS/MS. When using nanoLC equipment consider column choice, software and accurate and precise flow rate control.Software PlatformsSoftware platforms are useful for various stages of laboratory experiments from data collection to data storage and processing. For instance lab software is available for system control, data management, data analysis and qualification / validation.
