Product news

Thermo Electron Corporation has enhanced its SPE product offering to enable rapid, effective and economical sample clean-up prior to HPLC and GC analyses, thereby improving resolution and sensitivity, extending column lifetime and avoiding costly instrument downtime.

Thermo’s expanded SPE consumables range now features eleven phases in the HyperSep line, suitable for a wide range of applications and sample volumes in the pharmaceutical, environmental, biochemical, chemical and food and beverage industries.

Thermo, a leading source for chromatography consumables, offers a full range of products including SPE, HPLC and GC. The new SPE range offers consistently high recoveries, resulting in the phase (sorbent) retaining high levels of the analyte or compound of interest. Available in an increased number of sizes and chemistries and equipped with 96 well plates, this unique product line achieves fast sample preparation offering an ideal solution for high throughput environments.

The extensive SPE range is also accompanied by an information-rich applications library featuring a number of applications to help users make quick and informed decisions. Thermo’s extended product line includes its unique Hypercarb sorbent, a porous graphitic carbon ideal for the retention of very polar compounds not normally retained on C18 silica, for example very polar and water-soluble micopollutants from drinking water or pesticides and drug metabolites. Hypercarb has a different selectivity and excels at the retention of highly polar compounds. Additionally, it is stable across the entire pH range 0-14.

Thermo’s SPE range has been further enhanced with the addition of two new phases – Verify-AX and Verify-CX – capable of achieving rapid and accurate analysis of drugs of abuse. The extraction of drugs of abuse from biological fluids using a purely non-polar retention mechanism often results into a large amount of non-polar co-extracted material, which interferes with the subsequent analysis. The new SPE line includes mixed mode columns based on strong cation or anion exchange combined with a C8 group that can be utilized in a cation exchange retention mechanism giving a much cleaner extract.

Gas ChromatographyGas chromatography (GC) is an analytical technique used to separate and quantitate mixtures of small and volatile compounds. Gas chromatographs or GC systems include components such as GC columns, detectors, pumps and autosamplers. Choose from packed or capillary GC columns, flame ionization (FID), photoionization (PID) electron capture detectors and selective or non-selective detectors. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis.
