Students entering the new Hemenway Hall addition this fall at Framingham State University will enjoy eight new chemistry laboratories, each exclusively using filtered fume hoods that feature Erlab’s GreenFumeHood Filtration Technology. Erlab’s team recently finished installing the forty-nine filtered fume hoods needed for their Organic, Inorganic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry teaching laboratories. Each filtered fume hood is outfitted with Erlab’s superior Neutrodine filtration technology which is ideal for multidisciplinary handlings, is designed to address the ever-increasing requirements for safety and energy-efficiency, has best-in-class detection technology, and real-time communication for security and monitoring via PC, tablet or smartphone.

The design team’s decision to use filtered fume hoods provides a safe working environment for the students and offers significant first cost and operational cost savings for the school. The chemistry involved is easily handled by Erlab’s Green Fume Hood Filtration Technology. The combinations of acids, bases, and solvents used by the students will be fully absorbed by the Neutrodine filters, which will last greater than 2 years as have been proven at other installations with similar chemical usage.

First Cost Savings: The mechanical systems were reduced by 25%, thereby lowering their costs by over $917,000 and providing a net savings of over $330,000 on the project.

Energy Savings: The reductions in exhaust air and make-up air, coupled with a long filter life will save over $39,000 annually in operating costs and help the project achieve LEED® Silver.

Erlab and its partners, Air Master Systems and Labconco, understand the challenges of constructing a new lab, renovating an old lab, or adding on to an existing lab, and offer a solution that is ideal for the majority of environments. This made the Green Solution Hood by Air Master Systems (featuring Erlab’s GFH Filtration Technologies) a key factor in the design of Framingham State University’s new laboratories.

Captair Smart Ductless Fume Hood

Erlab

Provides total filtration of toxic gases, fumes, odors, and powders. The Captair Smart ductless fume hoods are specifically designed to safely protect users when handling chemicals or powders that pose an inhalation risk. The configurable filtering system above the enclosure can be adapted to filter gases, solvents, powders, and particulates keeping the user and the lab protected by safely and efficiently recirculating air within the room and releasing purified air back into the room free of any toxic hazardous vapors or odors. No ductwork is required so installation is simple and the hood can be easily relocated. The depth of the hood can accommodate a variety of equipment including, rotary evaporators, bath circulators, or large balances. Benefits of an Erlab ductless fume hood: Independent test reports verifying filter efficiency, a published chemical listing, application questionnaire to validate filtration of the chemical process in the hood, certificate of validation for the chemicals used in the hood, and a safety program for the life of the hood. Product features: Can be outfitted with a carbon filter, a HEPA filter or both for your liquid, powder or liquid/powder applications. Each model includes a flow monitor, programmable timer, internal lighting, sampling port, air flow meter, and side panel utility ports for cables/fluid pipes. Optional accessories: Resin, stainless steel, or glass work surface, rolling cart with locking wheels, stationary workbench, transparent back panel, rear access door, particle pre-filter.

Fume Hoods and CabinetsFume hoods and biological safety cabinets are designed to provide personnel, sample and environmental protection by limiting exposure to hazardous materials. Safety cabinets are classified as class I, class II or class III and methods of contamination reduction include filters or air flow such as in laminar flow cabinets. Fumehoods and Biological Safety CabinetsFume hoods and biological safety cabinets are used to provide personnel, sample and environmental protection by limiting exposure to hazardous materials either by venting or enclosing hazardous sample space. Fume hoods include filtered and ductless fume hoods, general ducted fume hoods, laminar flow cabinets and cabinets for powder weighing. There are three classes of biological safety cabinet, dependent on the level of protection provided. Class I provide personnel and environmental protection, class II provide product, personnel and environmental protection. Class III provide the highest level of protection and are designed for use with high-risk biological agents. Other ventilated workspaces for the laboratory include glove boxes, glove bags, anaerobic and hypoxic workstations.
