Product news

Millipore announced today that the European Union’s Council of Ministers has granted a CE mark to the company’s Amicon Ultra-15 centrifugal filter device (10K molecular weight cut-off). This indicates that the product meets all essential requirements set forth in the In-vitro Diagnostics Directive.

The measurement of specific proteins is important for the diagnosis and management of disease states. In some cases, the proteins of interest (such as macromolecules found in human specimens such as serum, urine, spinal fluid, and other biological fluids) are present in low abundance and require concentration prior to clinical laboratory analysis. Millipore’s Amicon Ultra-15 centrifugal filter unit provides ultra-fast, high recovery purification and concentration of these proteins. This can be valuable prognostic indicators of specific abnormalities, such as tumor cells.

Sample volumes up to 15 mL can be concentrated in as few as 10 to 15 minutes with negligible loss of sample. The device’s Ultracel™ regenerated cellulose membrane minimizes adsorption of the macromolecules and provides high recovery of fully functional proteins (typically >90%).

Amicon Ultra-15 centrifugal filters are compatible with most rotor types and allow for direct pipettor acess, which eliminates the need for an extra processing step. The device is available in packs of 8, 24, and 96 filter units, which come assembled with centrifuge tubes and caps. Millipore also offers the CE-marked Amicon Ultra-4 centrifugal filter device for sample volumes up to 4 mL.

Millipore’s Bioscience division delivers complete solutions and services for pharmaceutical, academic, life science, clinical and government research laboratories. ProteomicsProteomics is the systemic bioinformatics study of proteins and amino acids, including their structure, size, function and identification. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.CentrifugesCentrifuges are used to separate particulates suspended in a liquid via the application of a centrifugal force including cells, macromolecules, nanoparticles and precipitates. Centrifuges come in three sizes: microcentrifuges, benchtop and floor-standing centrifuges, depending on the volume and number of samples that require separation. When choosing a centrifuge, consider its maximum separation power indicated by its relative centrifugal force (RCF) value. Low force centrifuges reach a maximum RCF of 8,000 g, high-force centrifuges can reach maximum RCF values of 80,000 g. For extremely high forces, consider ultracentrifuges (up to 800,000 g). Refrigerated and vacuum centrifuges also known as concentrators are available for more specialized applications. A range of volumes are available for centrifuge tubes and microfuge tubes, depending on sample sizes. This is a useful technique for sample concentration or sample drying. Many centrifugal evaporators are modular with a central vacuum pump for generating low pressure. Useful features of evaporators or vacuum ovens include minimal solvent bumping, solvent resistance, computer control, temperature regulation and benchtop design.
