Celebrating creativity and effective communication: Meet this year’s winners

Best in Digital Communication Awards were awarded to four overall winners for the following interviews that showcase the work of scientists in the field:

An insightful interview with Dr. John Connolly, CSO of Tessa Therapeutics, exploring next-generation immunotherapy and its application in targeting pediatric high-grade gliomas with the help of ACEA Biosciences’ xCELLigence® Real-Time Cell Analysis Technology.

An article discussing the use of RNAscope technology by Advanced Cell Diagnostics, to research microglia and brain disease, with Dr. Timothy Hammond, Boston Children’s Hospital – ‘The Good, the Bad and the Good that Turns Bad.

A fascinating Scientists’ Channel® interview with Dr. Aleksandra Dukic, postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital, on novel targets to inhibit Glioblastoma invasion. The video highlights the importance of NuAire, Inc’s cell culture equipment for analysis of patient-derived cells. On winning the award Dukic commented, "It has been great experience to take part in the video interview and moreover exciting to hear that my Scientists' Channel interview won an award. I'm happy to know that my video was very popular."

And, a video workshop on new methods for culturing viable adult cortical neurons, from Dr. Erna A. van Niekerk, University of California San Diego (UCSD), featuring technology from Miltenyi Biotec.

Best in Digital Marketing Awards celebrated effective communications and were presented to the following winners:

Luminex Corporation for their social media parody video, Multiplex Star.

Bertin Instruments for the application eBook, ‘Essential Guide to Quality Control in Cell-Based Assays.’

BMG LABTECH for its application note describing a novel aggregation-specific fluorescent probe for monitoring prefibrillar protein aggregation.

Sartorius Group’s expert webinar: ‘A Neuroscientist’s Guide to Live-Cell Analysis: Techniques & Benefits.’

BioTek Instruments, Inc for the application eBook, ‘Long-Term 3D Spheroid Culture & Analysis - An Essential Guide.’

SelectScience Editor-in-Chief Kerry Parker said: “We’re hugely proud to host these awards celebrating communications excellence within the science industry. Many congratulations to all the winners for joining us in championing creativity and effective conversation between scientific manufacturers and scientists. It’s only by working together like this that we can accelerate scientific progress as we need to.”

The lab equipment scientists love the most

At the party, the latest winner of a coveted Gold SelectScience Seal of Quality was announced as the Logos BiosystemsLUNA™ Family of Automated Cell Counters.

Zymo Research also received a special customer engagement award in celebration of receiving Seals of Quality for five of its DNA/RNA purification kits.

Seals of Quality recognize the top 0.1% of laboratory products that consistently receive the highest customer review ratings and are designed to enable scientists to see at a glance the instruments and services their peers love the most. There are four levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze. SelectScience has now awarded Seals of Quality to a total of 49 lab products from across the scientific spectrum.

CEO and Co-Founder of SelectScience, Arif Butt said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our reviewers around the world for sharing their valuable opinions and also to congratulate the Seal of Quality winners, who have been recognized by the people who matter most — their customers.”

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. Incubators are necessary equipment for cell culture and microbial research. Control temperature with heated or refrigerated incubators, or the levels of CO2 and oxygen with CO2 incubators. Using environmental chambers, create a humid climate for testing samples. Find the best incubators in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Cell-Based AssaysCell-based assays are used to monitor the presence, quantity and activities of a desired cellular analyte including drug molecules or biomarkers. This can reveal information on cell health (apoptosis, cytotoxicity, viability and proliferation assays), cell metabolism, cell migration and cell signaling mechanisms. Find the best cell-based assay products, kits and equipment with our peer reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receiving pricing direct from manufacturers.DNA / RNA Extraction and PurificationPurified DNA and RNA are required for numerous downstream molecular biology applications. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations. Find the best DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Light MicroscopyLight microscopes or optical microscopes are used to visualize microscale objects under magnification, including cells, clinical specimens and materials. Lab equipment for light microscopy includes confocal microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, zoom and stereo microscopes. Microscope slides and imaging reagents are available for visualizing samples, as well as various microscope stages and incubators for large or temperature-sensitive samples. Find the best light microscopes in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.DNA / RNA QuantificationDetection and quantification of nucleic acids is important in molecular biology, cloning, expression, forensics and clinical diagnostics. Nucleic acids can be detected by labeling with colorimetric, fluorescent or radio labels and using in situ hybridization kits to identify specific sequences. Multiple nucleic acids can be detected and quantified at once using RNA / DNA detection beads or RNA / DNA microarrays.
