Product news

Tecan and Promega have developed a turnkey workstation for fully automated extraction of gDNA from whole blood samples. Designed to meet the needs of biobanks and high throughput genomic laboratories, the Freedom EVO® HSM workstation provides reliable walkaway extraction of gDNA from large volume blood samples using Promega’s proven ReliaPrep™ Large Volume HT gDNA Isolation System.

The Freedom EVO - HSM workstation is designed to streamline biobanking workflows, offering intelligent one-tube gDNA extraction from up to 32 samples in less than four hours. The compact system is controlled by Tecan’s intuitive TouchTools™ touchscreen interface, and features pre-installed protocols that have been rigorously tested and verified by Promega. Using the platform’s liquid level detection function, the system is able to automatically calculate the reagent volumes for each sample, ensuring efficient walkaway extraction of high quality DNA from 1-10 ml of blood and meeting the specific requirements of next generation sequencing methods.

Caroline Huber, Senior Market Manager at Tecan, commented: “We are very pleased to be working in close collaboration with Promega. Tecan’s expertise in laboratory automation is a great fit with Promega’s genomics tools and reagents, creating a truly unique solution for biobanking applications, backed by the technical support and experience of both companies.”

“This really is an ideal set up for laboratories,” added Promega’s Genomics Marketing Director Tim Sheehy. “As a reagent solutions provider, we know that sample requirements can change from one project to another. The efficiency and reliability of Tecan’s Freedom EVO system make it the ideal platform for integrating the ReliaPrep Large Volume HT gDNA Isolation System, offering customers the flexibility to handle a wide range of sample types and volumes.”

Genome AnalysisGenomics, the study of genomes, includes functional genomics, evolutionary genomics and comparative genomics. There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.DNA / RNA Extraction and PurificationPurified DNA and RNA are required for numerous downstream molecular biology applications. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.Next Generation SequencingNext-generation sequencing (NGS), also known as whole-genome sequencing, high-throughput sequencing and massive parallel sequencing, produces and analyses thousands to millions of nucleotide sequences at once. Sequencing systems operate via varying technologies depending on the manufacturer, including sequencing by synthesis, ligation, pyrosequencing, ion semiconductor and single-molecule real-time sequencing. For NGS, library preparation is paramount to successful sequencing. In this section, explore a range of library preparation kits, from targeted, amplicon-based or hybridization-based kits including epigenomic, transcriptomic and genomic workflows to fragmentation kits.
